Introduction to MARFLEET Postcards

Evidence so far uncovered suggests that there are two series of Marfleet Postcards:

Topographical and

Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.).
- Topographical
  MARFLEET postcards were published between about 1920 and 1937. The area covered by these postcards is that area of the Isle of Wight known as the West Wight and includes the areas around Alum Bay and the Needles, Colwell Bay, Freshwater Bay, Totland Bay and Yarmouth.
  - Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.)
    CAMP AT OSBORNE, ISLE OF WIGHT, FOR WOMEN V.A.D. MEMBERS.
    A Camp has been arranged at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, for the Detachments in the Island, and, through the courtesy of Sir Guise Guise-Moores, for members of other counties who may wish to attend. The Camp will be open for officers on 21st May, 1928, and for members on 23rd May, and will last for a fortnight. The cost per head for members is 2s. a day, and for officers 2s. 3d. per day. Members will be accommodated in the Naval College Buildings, and those wishing to bring tents may do so. Extracted from the British Red Cross journal, 'The Red Cross'; January 1928, page 9.
    
    There is, as yet, no evidence of MARFLEET postcards from the earliest camp, but between 1929 and 1933 inclusive Herbert S. Marfleet was one of the official photographers at these events.
    
    1933 was the last year in which the National V.A.D. Training Camp was held at Osborne.
